Sometimes it feels like the flour is empty and the oil jar is dry! Don’t feel alone as we walk with two widows today in scripture, both very poor but also very faithful.
Can faithfulness be more important than wealth? Certainly, it is! One does not have to look far in scripture or the teachings of Jesus to ascertain this reality. Yet so often we rely too much on wealth, power, prestige, and our own pleasure. These things have a role to play, but quickly lead us to sin when they become priorities… or gods in our lives.
As we kickoff our Phase 2 fundraising efforts for St. Joan of Arc Catholic School I realize that we have asked much… and it might seem like Ezekial approaching the widow and saying, “bake me a cake!” when the only flour left in the jug is for the last meal of the widow and her son. Yet Ezekial does not ask this favor without compassion or with selfishness, but rather complete trust in God’s providence. We believe what we are doing is for the glory of God, the good of our community, the future growth of the Kingdom in our midst.
St. Joan of Arc is not merely a school, it is our identity, our mission, our discipleship in following Jesus and teaching others to follow him as well. It is why the Catholic Bishops of the world support schools and why we have saints dedicated to our cause.
Let us invoke the school saints to intercede for St. Joan of Arch Catholic School, from St. Xavier Cabrini, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Katherine Drexel, St. John Newman, St. John Boscoe, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Angela Merici, and St. Gemma Galgani… pray for us! And this is just to name a few! Let us also invoke our patrons, St. John Vianney, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Bernadette, and St. Joan of Arc as we move into this important time!
