The Heart of the Giver to Our Capital Campaign

Thank you to everyone who has helped us raise, as of Dec. 22, more than $16.7 million toward our One Faith – One Family – One Future Challenge Goal of $25 million. (A complete list of donors-to-date can be found on the campaign website.)

We all know the saying, “It’s not the gift, but the thought that counts.”

We usually use it whenever we get one of those presents that we really didn’t want or need. It’s what I remind my wife every Christmas when we get the hard-as-rock cookies from my sister in California, and that I had to remind her again the one Christmas that UPS delivered a waffle maker from my sister and brother-in-law in CT—we had a perfectly good one sitting in our pantry!

It’s a true saying, though, isn’t it? Because at the center of every gift is the heart of the giver.

This is a time of year especially that we desire good gifts. Life, love, health, time with family and friends, some good Christmas cookies, and, as we continue to press on toward the Challenge Goal in our capital campaign, some big pledges—these are all good gifts that we desire.

God wants to give us these good things as well. After all, God’s the one who has written the desire for the good things of life into our hearts. Like any loving Father or Mother, God wants only the best gifts for us his beloved children.

The bible tells us that every good thing comes to us as a gift from above. Every gift we have, whether it be the air we breathe, another day of life, the friends and family at our side, the roof over our head, the food at our table, is given because our God is moved by His love for us. At the center of every good gift is the heart of the Giver.

Jesus knew this very well. That’s why he could preach that where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. He knew that what the Father treasures, that where His heart lies is with you and me, the people of his creation.

Where does your heart lie? What do you treasure? For what are you most thankful? My prayer for each and every one of you this Christmas season is that you know fully and completely the treasure you are to God and to this church. Deep down in your heart of hearts, may you treasure the love you have received in Christ, in this community of faith, in all the good gifts God has given you.

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

At the center of every gift is the heart of the Giver.
